The new series of quarters featuring National Parks and National Sites will continue in 2011 with the issuance of the 2011 Gettysburg National Military Park Quarter. This will represent the sixth release in the series overall. The site was selected for the state of Pennsylvania.
The final design selection for the reverse of the coin features the 72nd Pennsylvania Infantry Monument. This is one of the parks many markers and monuments that is located at the battle line of the Union Army at Cemetery Ridge. On the obverse of the coin will be the portrait of George Washington that is being used in common for all issues of the broader series.
Immediately after the Battle of Gettysburg, numerous sites began to be preserved through the efforts of concerned citizens. The lands were eventually transferred to the federal government when Gettysburg National Military Park was established. President Grover Cleveland signed the authorizing legislation on February 11, 1895.
The Gettysburg Quarter is scheduled to be released on January 24, 2011 with a public launch ceremony to be held at the park on the following day. In addition to general circulation, the coins will appear within numismatic products offered by the US Mint.
